It is our great pleasure to announce the upcoming International Mathematical Modelling Challenge (IM2C). On behalf of the IM2C Canadian Committee, we would like to invite you and your students as well as your school to participate in this exciting and prestigious international contest. This is the third time that the contest is held in Canada and is available to all Canadian public and private Secondary School students (Grades 9-12). The IM2C is an international contest that challenges high school students to apply mathematical tools and concepts on real-world problems in biology, engineering, finance, medicine, social science etc. The IM2C contest inspires students to develop creative problem-solving skills, engage in productive teamwork and utilize effective communication, all of which are critical to a student’s future success in life.
The IM2C contest period in Canada is from 4 pm, on Monday March 12, 2018 and 4 pm, on Monday April 23, 2018. Teachers act as facilitators who will register their teams and submit their solutions on-line. Each team is up to 4 students from the same school (mixed grades is fine). They will work on 5 self-selected consecutive days during the contest period to solve a practical problem and write a summary and a full solution for online submission. Registration is free. More information regarding contest registration, contest rules and awards selection can also be found at http://im2c-canada.math.yorku.ca.
To help your students gain confidence in the IM2C competition, we will hold a 3-day “Math for Real” workshop at the Fields Institute of Mathematics in downtown Toronto, from March 12 to March 14, 2018. Although the Workshop is intended for students, teachers are also welcome to attend. Participants will have inspiring experience in modelling, programming, writing and team-building. Registration fee is $50 per person (lunches included, spaces limited). Applications to fee waiver are available for students with financial needs. More information will be available shortly.
We look forward to seeing great results from all the participants. Due to the high expected participation rate, teams are encouraged to register early for the competition. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us directly.
